Why do bad things happen to good people?

When I was a child, I often wondered why bad things seem to happen to people who are good. Over the years, I have been fortunate to meet many genuinely kind and decent individuals. And yet, unfortunately, I have also seen how fate has been unkind to some of them.

It is never easy to accept that someone who helps others, builds healthy families or work environments, and contributes positively to the community has to go through tragedy or deep loss. It feels unfair. Almost contradictory.

From my experience, this question can be looked at from three different perspectives.

First, it may simply be a matter of human perception. In reality, difficult events do not “choose” good or bad people. They just happen. Being a good person does not guarantee a life free of problems, just as being a bad person does not automatically attract only suffering.

Second, I have noticed that some good people are sometimes too good for their own good. They trust too easily, accept what others say without questioning, open their doors assuming everyone thinks and feels the same way, or step into risky situations relying only on prayer, without enough awareness or protection. This does not explain everything, of course, but it does offer part of the answer.

Third, there is the law of karma. What happens to us is not limited to this single lifetime. Someone may have created many positive karmic accounts in this life, but what about previous ones? Karma moves across births. A good present life does not necessarily mean the past was the same. In that sense, today’s goodness may be planting the seeds for a brighter future - even if challenges still appear now.

There is one important point to be added: altruism and selflessness. I have lived in community for almost forty years, and the spirit of service has deeply shaped my life. The inner feeling it creates is powerful and difficult to describe. Yet I am also aware that serving others does not guarantee that problems will never come.

In the spiritual classes I read daily, there is a beautiful idea: we should feel free from obstacles, knowing that obstacles will still come. This means that when service is truly altruistic, there is an inner sense of protection - like finding shelter during a hurricane. The storm may continue outside, but inside there is stability.

And if we look at history, with a few exceptions, many good people who went through difficult times eventually ended up well - at least in their hearts. This is visible in their legacy, their influence and even in the lives of those who came after them.

In other words, bad things may happen to good people, but at least their qualities become their shelter in the worst moments.

Problems? Try to use your resilience.

When there is a problem, a normal person like you and me often jump to the solution. Many times, it turns to be a jump to conclusion…

Another way is to reflect upon the problem, visualize or feel the possible solutions and then, to make a decision. In this case, we are using a small part of our own resilience.

In terms of problem solving, our resilience has a different role and it is useful to understand it.

What is resilience? It is basically our inherent capacity to bounce back after a crisis or a serious problem. Even though it is inherent, it can be increased or diminished…

What is it in terms of problem solving? Well, for small problems there is a chance to use your own resilience:

1. The problem comes, causing a small storm in the mind, too many thoughts, and it turns decisions into a difficult task.

2. We face the problem, we are able to diminish the storm in the mind, we make certain decisions.

3. We are back to where we were before the problem, according to our resilience.

However, resilience is a human quality or faculty, it is part of the self, so we could say resilience exists since before the problem, that is, it may help at every stage of the problem:

1. The problem comes, causing a small storm in the mind, too many thoughts, and it turns decisions into a difficult task. I meditate, I calm my mind, I talk with someone because I know I am strong and I don’t stop growing because of that problem. I am a resilient person.

2. We face the problem, we are able to diminish the storm in the mind, we make certain decisions. My decisions come from my own reflection, from my own power. They start in my mind in the form of a discernment process, and then I implement them.

3. We are back to where we were before the problem, according to our resilience. I see the storm of problems and bad situations departing from my life and I prepare myself to keep on moving on… I never stopped, but it is possible my personal change was affected by it; now, I move on with full force.

If we do this exercise, not only we will be able to overcome a problem without much effort, we will be also increasing our resilience.

Your thoughts can be flowers, spears or boomerangs

I would like to think of my thoughts as flowers as they pollinize others’ ideas, generate life or are so positive that others can feel their energy. They make our lives more beautiful and motivate us to move ahead.

But, when problems come up, my thoughts can be spears, like the old gods’ legends… Spears that destroy the obstacles by making my own powers to emerge or to turn them into leverages for my own advancement. My thoughts have power, and as I am aware of it, I can use that power whenever I need or I want.

And last, but not least, my thoughts are ALWAYS boomerangs and whenever I launch them, they will be back. So, I endeavor to have the best thoughts possible, so that the best will come back to me.

This enables me to understand my own thinking process and the ways my thoughts manifest. And how they SHOULDN’T manifest.

I would like to challenge you to think of your thoughts by using three different elements; you can use the same as mine or create your own.

To let go and to let in

There are circumstances we shouldn’t be dealing as they hurt us, they remind us of the worse of other people and we are unable to enjoy them. They are not part of a self-progress path; on the contrary they may destroy our sense of purpose.

And so, we just let go of them, we let them to flow to past waters and we move on, back to our self-progress road.

However, from time to time, a situation would emerge in which a lesson can be learnt. It is even possible that situation would make us realize something and change. From time to time, whatever we should have let go… we should not. On the contrary, we should open our heart and let ourselves in…

Maybe by using wisdom or talking to other people, we are able to discern which is which and at times of so much uncertainty, that discernment is even more important, because if we don’t let it go, we may regret about it later, and if we don’t let ourselves in, we will miss a valuable lesson.

In my experience, there is a question that I ask myself: How necessary is for me to go through this? If I understand this is not necessary, I make effort to step away of this circumstance; if I appreciate its importance, I brace myself and I prepare for the storm that is about to come.

Use your wisdom and don’t leave your path of self-progress.

Finding a gem among the stones

Problems.

Criticism.

More problems.

The boss is not happy…

… neither your life partner.

The weather is awful and…

… let’s not even mention the road traffic!

Bad situations come to our lives, which can turn into a thorn in our existence and it is not easy to avoid it. But we can change the way to see these scenes.

First, let’s take a look into that idea of bad situations as thorns. We can remind ourselves that behind any thorn there is a beautiful rose waiting for us. It may be a difficulty or a small tragedy, but there is a rose in the form of a lesson, a change in the lifestyle or something even more valuable. Instead of focusing on the thorns, look for the rose!

Second possibility is to see circumstances as stones on the way: enough stones, your way will be well paved. Yes, it is bad, but it will pass and you will certainly grow due to this. Remember the paved road, instead of the stones.

And in relation to that, a few of the stones may be gems: because your boss is not happy with you, you find a better job or due to the intense traffic jam, you decide to go and live at a better place. Check the bad things in your life, because a few jewels are expecting to be collected.

How heavy is your present?

Have you ever received a very heavy gift from another person? You would often enjoy, but many times you will feel annoyed while you would try to carry that around. It is possible would get broken.

What about your present (tense)? Is it light and shiny, or heavy and dull?

The situations are what they are, but our perception changes their weight. For instance a person can tell you how the weather is bad and another person would call it wonderful, even though the weather is the same for both of them.

By looking at the weather in a bad way, the person will experience negative emotions and it is possible that affects their health. Also, because the weather is bad, their social life will be affected and possibly even their job.

By looking at the (same) weather in a positive way, the person will experience constructive emotions, which maybe will affect (positively) their health. Perhaps because the weather looks good, their social life and their career will blossom too.

Now, there is a realistic optimism in which the person acknowledges the weather is bad, but that is not an obstacle for their health, social or work life. In fact, it becomes an interesting challenge and the individual has a chance to celebrate after overcoming it.

If you are feeling your present as a heavy burden, about to break the soul’s back, a few suggestions:

  • Talk with someone who is more optimistic in relation to the present, but very realistic about it.
  • Count your blessings; there are so many things for which you can be proud, happy or excited.
  • Try to talk to yourself, reflect and understand why you are feeling like this in relation to the present.
  • Meditation helps you to focus on the present and take maximum benefit.
  • Remember: your present is a gift life has given you.

When being creative is the solution, the only solution

 The 9 points puzzle.

Out of the box!

Just do it!

Creativity is a spark that changes reality in ways that are often unthinkable before it emerges. It makes life a funny experience and a it creates a novelty.

But creativity is more than that as it changes the mindset enabling the person to see something else… beyond the situation…

When you allow creativity to take up the flow of your life, it means you are allowing yourself to dare, to go against the odds and to think beyond the present paradigm.

Problems emerge partly because of the way you get into the depth of the present life; by being creative you are moving away, moving towards a new horizon and new possibilities.

In reality if you have a problem, the ONLY solution (at least one of the first ones) is to challenge your concepts and ideas, to try something new, to be creative.

So ignite the spark and a fire in your life, burning the old and open space for the new to come into your existence.

Calming down… there is a storm coming

When storms come, we tend to be dragged by them. After all, they are more powerful than us… or not?

We have created as a civilization, several means and tools to protect ourselves from this incredible force of nature and although our protection may not be perfect, it has good potential.

Now, what about the storms of life? Like a pandemic, a financial crisis, divorce, health issues, someone dear who just departed…

By using the same approach, there should be means and tools to protect ourselves from the effect of such storms, and one of them is very simple: just calm down.

Calmness has a deep effect in the mind, by creating a series of thoughts and constructive emotions that protect us from the worse effects of the storms we are going through, which will guide us and prevent harm.

Of course, it is not easy to be calm during the storm, but by practicing a lot, the accumulated calmness will work out pretty well during the worse stages of the crisis, coming up naturally.

How can you practice calmness? I meditate; other people go to hills or beaches, others prefer to be in silence for some time everyday, there are those who love to pray.

Although the means and tools will be different for each one, by generating a routine in which the experience of being calm is valued, even prioritized, the next time a big storm comes to your life, you will be prepared and probably, you will be able to offer shelter to others too.

Is there any future in my horizon?

Images can be inspiring… A picture I have taken shown a foggy road and although you could see the beginning and a few meters further, nothing was waiting for you ahead.

At these times, that is future for us.

For some unknown reason, humanity has been obsessed in learning about their future; so many things were created for that. And then the uncertainty paradigm has become predominant, so there is no horoscope that can really tell you the future now, and no consultant or coach can really guide you in these very foggy times.

You are on your own…

But…

There is another wonderful possibility: you can create your own future. Step by step, action by action, thought by thought. That is, you are your own leader.

Taking into account that, here are a few suggestions:

  • To be in uncertain times does not mean to not plan your future. Just be deeper and think in terms of a future vision instead of only objectives & aims.
  • Be prepared to adapt, but don’t lose focus or important things related to life such as values and relationship.
  • Make your present a real present for yourself and the people who live and work with you. Whatever you do now, its fruits will become your future at some point.
  • Develop your resilience in such a way that you will face obstacles from a high energy.
  • When you fail for some reason, just turn the failure into a step towards your success. Learn, change and implement the lessons onto your life.

Can I bring the past back?

A recurrent topic of time travel books and movies has been the possibility of going back to the past, so that the present would change. This was in fact the main plot for the classic book of H. G. Wells, The Time Machine, which I think does not require introduction.

What about to bring the past back? Again when we look at science fiction, we will find a few examples, the most well-known is Jurassic Park, by Steven Spielberg.

Now, let’s leave the realm of science fiction and focus on our normal practical life: can I bring the past back? That is, can I resuscitate my personal dinosaurs?

It is normal that we would want to bring good experiences back: maybe that person you’ve been together twenty years ago could be the same person now that you met them again, or the same energy you had when you were twenty, it should come up again.

That is not possible… completely. After all, you cannot expect someone is still the same after twenty years or that your body is going to perform in the same ways as it did in the past.

But there are things you can do that will revitalize your life:

  • Whatever you used to be in the past, at least the inner qualities are still there, ready for your use. Use them in various activities.
  • Whatever the other person used to be in the past, at least the inner qualities are still there; if you look at them with the right vision, you will see it. Relate to that person on basis of those qualities.
  • Although your body is not the same, there is energy still there. Change your habits and refocus that energy.

In other words, instead of trying to bring the past back, just make a better use of your present and make the best of yourself to emerge.

8 asana of the heart – a LEVER?

Love can be creative, so think of your heart as a LEVER…

Hard? Maybe, but the idea is that love can change the world…[1]

Just check your life and think of an area of your existence that is in crisis, a big crisis – maybe confusion, perhaps anger. Now, focus on your own love, the love that is in your heart… let that love flows through you and through that wound.

After one or two days doing that, just check because I am sure things would have changed, at least partially.

Why? Love activates the best of you and it is obvious that part of the best of you keeps the solution for your problem. When you feel love in a conscious way, you are also opening the door of many other beautiful things that you keep there in the cupboard of the self.

Love is the lever that opens a treasure within, but most of the time we don’t use love in that way. So, try again: think of your heart as a LEVER.

Another image you can use is your heart as a lift that elevates you, because by connecting with all that reservoir of love, you are also increasing dramatically your own self-esteem.

Problems look so small from up above…

Let your love make you open difficult doors or elevate yourself. Problems will still be problems, but you will have the key in your hand.

This post is part of a series called 8 asana of the heart.

I recommend you to watch 8 postures of the heart.

Don’t underestimate your own power

When big walls come up in front of you, the only thing you think is a) how to avoid it, b) how to climb it, or c) how to destroy it.

But there are more alternatives to that. Look within and you will find a reservoir of power that has been taking you in this long journey called life.

It is time to use that power to deconstruct the walls, recreating the impact they have on your life, and not avoiding it. Try to face it instead and ask yourself: What newness can I bring on myself to cope with this obstacle?

It is time to use your power to overcome the walls of your life. To climb may be exhausting, but if you are able to fly… Let your mind fly over the obstacle, visualize the end and start developing the qualifications you will need to reach there.

It is time to empower the self and just pass through the wall. If you destroy it, rubbles may prevent you to move forward. So, transform yourself and you will see how much you can go forward.

How does that work? Let’s give 3 examples related to each of the situations:
  • I have a very bad sickness and that will change my life to worse. Accept the situation in your heart, talk and promote dialogue with people who can help you and other people with the same sickness. Look at it as an opportunity to try new things in your life and cooperate with others too; that is the most powerful thing you can do, and you really can do it.
  • Oh, no, another crisis? In the last one I was working ten hours a day, wonder how many hours I will be working this time… Meditate and recharge the self. Yes, it is a crisis and you can’t just ignore it, but let your mind fly over the situation and see beyond it. By using this technique you will possibly identify some new skills you can develop that will give you an advantage over the crisis, but most important thing is that you will feel empowered.
  • I am sure I can destroy this obstacle, I will fight through it and I will defeat this, instead of being defeated. Go and meditate again; more than meditating start a journey of reflection and transformation. Instead of fighting against this wall – which is invisible – connect yourself to that invisible power you have and see how you start to realize better ways of dealing with it. Success comes from empowerment, not fight.

So, I hope this will help you to work with the walls in your life.

Am I still me?

Something a few people talk about is how crisis change people, for better and for worse. Maybe a new temperament emerges or an incredible ability of dealing with tough situations that turn a common person into a hero.

That’s also part of taking care of the self: to prevent the self to be contaminated or suffer of a post-traumatic stress so serious after a crisis that they may become almost unrecognizable.

Self-care in this case starts with knowing exactly the answer for this interesting riddle: Who am I? The idea behind is if you don’t really know yourself, it is easy to get lost in the hurricane of situations and adapt in a negative way like the frog…

Many years ago, I used to stay during holidays on the beach along with my late grandmother.
Once, she was cooking something and so let a bit pot of water in the stove while we went out to do an errand.
When we came back, the water was boiling. We could see the smoke, but she has left the pot open and there was a surprise…
A frog was inside it!

Legend says a frog would jump into boiling water and because its physiology, it would adapt to the temperature; unknowingly it would start to cook and when it realizes the danger, it would be too late…

Maybe that is the case when a crisis happens, because we adapt, which is good, but it is possible we start to lose some of our principles, most precious values, awareness and attitude. We start to change as people

By reflecting on the self and its depth, the individual learns more about him or herself and is able to keep their values, principles, awareness, attitude and all that is important and precious, no matter the crisis that is taking place.

In fact, this will help to overcome the obstacles and advance onto another level, taking care of the self all the way.

This is part of a series of posts on self-care.

A magic lamp!

It's like Aladdin's, but brighter. This lamp is called mind.

To activate this lamp, just rub it, that is, use your mind with a purpose instead of just letting it wander around... Let the hand of your best intentions touch your mind, making the best of it emerge.

In this magic lamp that we all have, there are unlimited treasures; really, you can achieve everything, not only for yourself but for people who are connected to you. When there is a clear purpose and focus, everything is possible.

But check your intentions while using your mind. One tip: the more selfless you are, the more powerful the outcome will be.

Like every lamp, there is a hidden genius waiting to be released, which is the force that your mind will use to bring about what you need and want to achieve. Actually, your magic lamp is so broad that it contains THREE GENIUS. The first and most important is that of a determined thought.

Sit peacefully and focus your mind on what you need, touching it gently with pure intentions. Now, let your mind generate the thoughts that can make the impossible become possible.

And do not be diverted! A determined thought is the match that transforms a candle into light... Think, speak and act.

The second genius is very special and important, helping you to overcome the obstacles of the path, because it will MOTIVATE you all the time. It's about constructive emotions.

One of the key reasons why we do not achieve what we have in mind are obstacles and adversities in general, which take away our desire, and frustrate and discourage us.

Therefore, fill yourself with positivism by talking with optimistic people, watching news that helps you increase hope, and discussing topics related to love, peace and happiness... The more you feed your constructive emotions, the more easily you will overcome obstacles.

The last genius is related to a process of introspection and reflection necessary to process what is happening. They are the feelings that exist on a deeper level than the emotions.

From time to time, stop along the way, look in the mirror of your own existence and recognize what exists within you, the feelings that come before emotions and even thoughts.

They come from your beliefs and serve to turn into memorable the incredible effort that your lamp will make: change your reality.

It is about time we turn to magic

Not long ago, I was part of a team organizing a big event here in Bogota and a suggested topic was The Magic of living aware. I was surprised because at least one person was against particularly one word: magic.

Yes, there has been a long time negative publicity in relation to that word, which evokes in many people’s minds images of goats’ heads or black candles, but magic is something present everyday: you are feeling sad and just after someone smiles at you, all that sadness flies away; you are jobless and out of the blue, an opportunity comes; your marriage is in serious danger and all of a sudden your spouse is gentle and caring again.

There are more:
  • If you don’t find this time of magic in your life, go to Humans of New York and you will be able to find it in someone’s life who has overcome the unbearable or who was a hero for a few hours.
  • A Syrian refugee going to Europe, in his very long journey, arrives at a country that has not been very welcoming for immigrants. He was part of a small group of illegal immigrants and they were found by a policeman who, in his broken English, checked if they were immigrants. When they confirmed, he asked them to get on his car. After a short trip, they reached his home and – magic! – they were given a space to stay for a while, food and some comfort in their hard journey.

But a magic scene in life is not like a miracle, there is always a reason behind: the person who smiled at you is someone you love but maybe you forgot, and you have been searching for job for a long time when the call comes in; not to mention the fact you have been working on yourself and trying to be more understanding in relation to your partner and the policeman in the Syrian’s young man’s story was in the war and he knows its horrors…

But still, it is magical since you can’t demand someone to smile, that your job search has results, your partner changes their mind or the horror of the war left whether scars or open hearts.

So, I think it is time we trust more on the power we all have to turn the impossible into possible. I would like to invite you for the next weeks to merge yourself into that magic stored inside your mind…

For this week, please, remember some magic moments that happened with you and share with all of us…

This is a series of posts on MAGIC…

No more problems…

OK, nobody likes a problem, but, you know what, they are good…

Problems enable me to make progress in life. Most of the time, problems make me reflect and understand reality in a different perspective and to be sincere, how boring a problem-free life would be!

In reality the problem is not with problems, but the lack of understanding or methodology to deal with them. Think about someone who does something you consider a problem in a cheerful way, like climbing a cliff or talk with their teenager child…

So, the real problem is to learn and to develop skills.

Next time you face a problem, don’t run, don’t evade, you don’t even need to change its name (a challenge…), just face it! Check:
  • How do I see myself after overcoming this problem?
  • What do I have to learn to deal with it?
  • How am I going to learn it?
  • In case there is not enough resources to learn (time, finances, etc.), what are other ways?
  • What can other people help me in terms of learning or practicing skills to face this problem?

A leader embraces those who create obstacles just like a student to a teacher - Reason 28

One of the beautiful things about being a leader is that criticism is welcome as it helps the person to improve.  Instead of getting upset by what others may say, a leader will embrace feedback and use it constructively.

For a leader, life is more than just living: it is an adventure, a book to be written and the most important university.  When he or she focuses on the university aspect, as good as the teachers are, the better the lessons will be.

The person who insults you is in fact a friend in disguise or a teacher who is interested in helping you to improve and to be an even better leader.

Maybe their method or manner of speaking is questionable, but since it is often unavoidable to have people opposing you, being a leader converts a normally annoying situation into a chance to grow.

You often think outside the box and manage great projects - Reason 25

People have a tendency to put themselves in a box, that is, an invisible and intangible box made up of beliefs and knowledge, perceived capacities and fears.  This box then creates self-fulfilling limitations, preventing the individual to do things according to their potential.

Some people are able to come out of those restrictions and we call them leaders.  The practical reason is the fact their tasks are often beyond their present capacity to perform them.

By being a leader, you have a constant need to challenge and to be creative, because what others see as impossible it becomes possible by you.  For a leader, ethics are the only restriction as they work as a compass signalling the path to be followed.

This perspective extends to life in general: every problem and bad situation inspires a leader to find a solution, beyond limitations and restrictions.  Beyond impossible.

Just look at the stars…

Stars shine no matter if you are sad or happy, whether you are looking at them or not.
They have been shining over wonderful events, celebrating human conquests, but they have also been present when civilizations went down and tragedy stroke mercilessly.
Even when dark and dense clouds try and block stars, they are still shining… And if there are so many other lights in the city and you can’t see the starts, well, those lights will cease to exist at some point, but the starts will go on and on.

They could be a wonderful analogy for hope or courage, for any human virtue that helps us to face the impossible and remain standing before it, ready to move on and move forward.
It could be a metaphor of the human spirit itself, on how many times it kindles and flickers, how many times illuminates and fades, just to reignites again.

As humans, we are stars that never die away and even when we are unhappy, going through misery, we are still shining…

Sometimes, dark clouds come on our way, blocking our vision and preventing us to see a brighter future; and yet, we shine…
Sometimes, others’ gleam dulls our best effort to be important, and yet, we shine…

Just look at ourselves… Just look at yourself!  You are the brightest star of Christmas…

Merry Christmas to you!

Living with different people

One thing about past stories was how they used to portray completely different characters meeting at some point and even getting married.

It seems a collective dream our society has experienced is to have different people living together in harmony… But, I think we can all agree that is not easy.

As reality knocks at our door, we have two basic options: trying to avoid different people as much as possible or to face and embrace them. Unfortunately, the first option seems to be the highest ranked.

We do live in a lonely world. Internet has united us, but it also has divided us, splitting us in different categories and replacing the need for physical contact with cyber love. And many will say it is working!

What will be the impact of that in the future? It is hard to predict, but we are able to visualize the first effects of that when we see a group of friends meeting together without talking with each other, keeping themselves busy with their own phone…

A similar situation has happened with cars. If you go to any big city in the world, you can check on the huge number of one-person cars roaming around our roads, and it does not matter how much some politicians or activists try to convince people to use public transport, it looks like more one-person cars emerge!

So, what will be the future if we keep moving on this lonely pace?

What about the second option? Why is it so hard to face other people and embrace their reality?

For years now I live in a different culture. So, talking about different people is easy for me. Even after decades it is not simple for me to just accept some of the things others do.

What has helped me is the awareness that we can always learn, and we can only learn when the other person has something different… yes, you cannot learn from equals.

Ok, you may learn from equals how to talk or walk, but I guess you went over that period of your life, right? After your basic learning is done, you need people who don’t think like you, who don’t talk like you and who don’t behave like you to learn important things in your life.

The reason is that LEARNING MEANS CHANGING and changing means challenging something you think it is normal. It is like when you are an expert in what you work or you have a deep realization; that challenge helped you to change, that is, to learn.

And challenges only happen when others are different than you. Or, when you are among equals, you start to experience that part of them, which is different than you – after all, ALL OF US is different among each other.

There is something more: perfection does not come with being surrounded and protected in a comfort zone. You will become better as you complement yourself with other’s specialties, virtues or values. That is the treasure I have found here in Colombia or interacting with people from so many cultures… I feel I am being complemented, I am not by myself anymore and I am a better person when I allow that complement to become part of me.

So, don’t turn another person away just because he does not share your values or behave in a weird way… On the contrary, open your mind and let that difference be life a fresh breeze, cleaning the air of your mind and spirit and helping you to be the great wonderful person you are.
