From disempowerment to empowerment

I have been working on the topic of empowerment for many years, since I realized the importance of power in life: that’s what we have that comes from within and helps us to defeat obstacles, to reinvent ourselves and to attain success.

However, I have noticed that there has been a decrement in the awareness of power; I would dare to say we are reaching very high levels of global disempowerment. How to turn this around? I would like to explore three of the present paradigms that show disempowerment and how to change that:
  • Aloneness and short-term relationships. People are either choosing to live by themselves or they have relationships that last very little time, creating a unique situation for the family-based societies, governments, the economy and many other levels.
  • The deep dissatisfaction, from citizens to government officers. In the past, this was a common trace of a dictatorial government, but nowadays even very well consolidated democracies are facing this, which may be considered a worldwide movement.
  • The fake media. Instead of a media that covers matters and subjects into their depth, the social network has opened the doors to all kind of information and news are often short and inaccurate, generating the chance for fake news and deepfakes.

Why does this indicate the growing disempowerment and how to reverse this trend?

First of all, the main reason people are alone is not that they don’t need others because they are so satisfied and fulfilled; reality is there is not enough strength to try and live with other people, by accommodating to others’ way of living. One way of solving it is to invest time in developing more assertiveness and dialogue techniques, which will help in creating new bridges between people.

That dissatisfaction also reaches the social level, which used to happen in non-democratic countries and people of democratic countries used to point and say well, that’s the result of dictatorship. By happening in a democracy, it shows people’s disempowerment as the big irony is that people are marching and protesting against people they themselves have put in that position... The empowerment in terms of citizenship comes from developing better criteria to use at time of election and to know more about the government and social structure, so learning ways of promoting change in a more effective way.

Last but not the least, information has always had a deep impact in our mindset and good powerful information helps us to feel more empowered. Let’s add to that truthful; if the news is not real, the effect tends to be the opposite, particularly when facts come out and the person realizes they believed in something false, losing self-confidence. On one hand, control the news that come to you and don’t believe in them just like that; on the other hand, prioritize more in relation to which information is relevant to you, and focus on that, leaving other pieces of data aside.

Going back to religions

Is religion good or bad?

Implicitly, this idea or question is daily present in the media, talks and dialogues. Crimes against people or by people are easily profiled according to a certain creed, even when, days later, is proofed that was not as such.

I believe the question is not much about the goodness of religion, but how religions may coexist. In reality, that has been the reality in many places for so many years and it is all based in a simple formula:
  1. I believe in what I believe, this is my Truth.
  2. You believe in what you believe, but I don’t share the same beliefs.
  3. As long as I don’t try to convince you or otherwise, we can keep on working and living together.

Even in old beliefs of religions, that formula was present and it was very common that while professing a certain religion, people would keep distance from other religions without saying the other belief was wrong.

Unwillingly, as religions go against each other – or more precisely, religious people go against other religious people – they are becoming weak. Well, they are not clearly linked, but if we check the history of religions, we may realize that when they used to coexist there were more people following them, religions had more strength and positive influence than nowadays.

Maybe we cannot impact religions, but we may impact other people who follow a religion by working on these 3 aspects:
  1. Believe in your own Truth, very strongly…
  2. …even though I don’t believe in it.
  3. I won’t try to convince you, please don’t try to convince me.
  4. EXTRA: let’s do something together; let’s create something new, creative and powerful.

In this way, it will be possible people from different faiths to coexist and thrive.

You are the source of harmony - Reason 24

We live together and we flourish as a worldwide big team, because we are human beings and it is in our nature.  Still, things don’t work always as we would like, because, among other reasons, we are so different from each other.

The pursuit of harmony is common nowadays, maybe motivated by the number of interpersonal conflicts.  For that reason, companies hire coaches and consultants to help their teams to work well together, mediators go from country to country to help solve issues and you sit down from time to time to wonder what to do about your own relationships.

It is easier for leaders as they always think of themselves as the ones to generate harmony.  They won’t look for it from others, nor will they wait for others to change, but they will provide that energy from their own actions, attitude and awareness.  To be part of the inner circle of a leader is an opportunity to feel harmony in practical life.

Harmony is something exquisite, because it is based on the truth, peace and mutual good wishes and it can be a healing experience for an entire group.  Where harmony prevails as the constant backdrop for any resolution of momentary conflict, it will be just like a modern piece of art: challenging and beautiful at the same time.

Finding the truth

I can't say I have been looking for the truth, but since I was a child, I was looking for something that was not present in my life. I have dedicated myself to read and learn as much as possible, but with no clear aim in my mind, except to understand my context. Unknowingly, I have been looking for the truth since I was a child.

One of the Hinduism ideas is that we are all living a big illusion... That is not far from the fact our society is more and more into things that provide us satisfaction, even though it is an illusion. A proof of that is the fact we give much more importance to industry than to agriculture; salaries, status, comments in the media, all show it. However, we can live without industry, but nobody can live without food. The reflection of that illusion in our economy is so big that a country is known as developed according to its own industries.

Similarly, we have surrounded ourselves - and I, as an individual, have surrounded myself - of things that give me the sense of comfort, satisfaction and happiness. But, in reality, most of it is an illusion. How to be free from it? By finding the truth about yourself and your life, about others and the world in general.

Looking for the truth is not something you can do using Google, nor even going to a library. It takes time, but, yes, you have to start somewhere, and Google and your local library is a nice beginning. Here are a few questions that can help you in that research.

  • Who am I? Beyond my known identity, what are my main characteristics?
  • Who is God? If you don't believe in God, what is your Higher Source of energy, power and love?
  • What is really happening in the world? Rather than a superficial analysis, how everything is connected?
  • What are my aims in life at the moment? Beyond my job and other responsibilities, what do I really expect from myself?
  • Which help do I need to accomplish whatever I want to accomplish?

I wish you success in this necessary and beautiful quest.
