Global peace… is it a dream?

On September 21st every year, the world celebrates the International Day of Peace. It is symbolic, but why do we need a particular day to celebrate peace?

The reasons are everywhere as we finish what many have called Long Peace, a period from 1945 without major wars between countries. At a global point of view, the Long Peace is dead as a war rages in Europe and other conflicts threaten our world in the rest of the globe.

But I am not sure the peace we want should be based solely in the absence of war. In fact, this phrase is key:

That since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences (sic) of peace must be constructed[1]

That is my belief, as well as so many other people after one of the worse conflicts of mankind. I do believe that the main war starts inside my mind.

Your mind.

Our mind.

And one day, it turns into something more serious.

This is why we do need a specific day to remind us about peace, so that our minds can refocus, diverting its attention from streaming, social network, problems and crisis.

We need an alarm that reminds us to look within and feel our own peace first.

Naturally, when we are peaceful, we will be acting, working, talking and moving around in a peaceful way, generating an atmosphere of peace.

Naturally, others will be touched by our peace and almost gently, their own minds will calm too.

Naturally, the dream of world peace will come to reality.

Are you with me?

Religion and spirituality: reflecting and living

We need a religion, so that we can see life under a different light. Religion shows that which is invisible as something you can live in your life: God, love, peace…

We also need spirituality as it is a background that can adapt to any reality: family, work, health…

Some could say spirituality is the feeling behind all the religious practices.

Lately, things have changed; in the past few years, many people started to dissociate themselves from religion and live their own spiritual pathway.

Other people have left spirituality behind and they live religion as a series of rituals or an obligation.

So, what to do? Live both as complements or just live one of them?

As times are getting rough and the world is spiraling down, we do need something that is not related to the situations and circumstances. We need that invisible energy and that powerful feeling.

If you are having this type of doubt or your life is not as you would like it to be, there is an easy solution to discern about what to do: live your own spirituality.

By starting from the background, you can understand your role in life and what would be the best life for you.

Reflect on that.

Live it.

Finding the treasures within

Take your hat and let’s go to an adventure!

The first station is your own mind; explore your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Is there any gem there? Maybe it is a good wish for someone who is causing problems to you or a deep feeling towards your family.

The second station is deep inside… it is beyond your perception of your name or personality, beyond your and others’ body. It is just a sensation of BEING… That gives you peace, love and unconditional joy.

A last station to find more treasures: it is the SOUL station, the point in which you are totally free from your body and its boundaries. You are free like a bird and you can fly… It is peace beyond imagination and it is not just a sensation. You ARE A SOUL.

Now, take those treasures back to your day-to-day life and use them in your work, in your relationships, in managing your health and all other aspects. That’s why those treasures exist!

Prosperity & peace

I think it is intuitive to link prosperity and peace, after all the more prosperous a place is, more peaceful will be. I wonder if the same is true for people…

In the past few years, news has come up of very prosperous people who would be suffering for some reason or another, even going to the extreme of suicide.

It is true there are not too many news to reach to the conclusion of money does not bring happiness… or peace. However, if you know someone who is really prosperous in terms of wealth, you probably know that person has many problems and has to face many crises. Worry and anxiety is a common trace associated to prosperity.

Maybe we have to look into prosperity beyond money or material wealth. When we look at a very prosperous country, besides their material wealth, there is an immaterial wealth: their culture, their values, their touristic places and many more things.

In the same way, besides wealth, every person has a huge treasure of qualities, inner powers, and talents. When those people join others, that treasure replicates in an infinite way.

In fact, looking back into countries that did not have a material wealth some time ago – like India or China – by investing their energy in their immaterial wealth, they are nowadays considered prosperous countries… So, if a person does not have material wealth, but they are connected to the immaterial one, then they are, without a shadow of doubt, very, very prosperous.

Now, because their focus is on the intangible part, PEACE will be developed since it is there too.

So if you feel you are not experiencing peace, work on acknowledging your own prosperity. Peace will come.

If you are not feeling that prosperous, tour around your inner wealth from time to time, and connect to your inner peace. Prosperity will come.

Peace within, peace outside

I do believe that whatever is inside will come outside at some point. So, if you cultivate peace within…

Maybe the world won’t turn peaceful completely.

It is quite possible your country will keep on experiencing violence.

Your city won’t be peaceful immediately, in fact not even your neighborhood.

Maybe your house will feel your peace, not sure about your work or school.

However, if you REALLY invest time and energy in that wonderful experience of peace, inside you…

At some point, people at your company, school or family will realize that and they will feel inspired to tap into that same source of peace.

Each person you touch will touch other people in your neighborhood, city, country or abroad; and many of them will be peaceful.

And one day, you will look at what you have inspired or created: the wonderful peaceful world we all want to come.

Why should you meditate for the world?

We should do many things for the world and there are several lists that include:

  • To be honest with others.
  • To be always caring.
  • To recycle, to reuse and to avoid buying more things.
  • Etc.

But it is not common to find to meditate as one of the important things to do for the world. And yet, it is very important.

Let’s check the former list:

  • To be honest with others will help in creating a better community; it will improve relationship and stimulate your professional career.
  • To be always caring will not only give someone else a feeling of inner comfort, but it will also open your heart, which will impact your relationships with others too, strengthening the community.
  • To recycle, to reuse and to avoid buying more things is not only the right thing to do, to help earth and its resources; it will also help you to save money and to have a better life.

So, to meditate… what will happen to you and to the world?

First, you will feel good… meditation gives a wonderful inner feeling and it improves your mood and state of mind.

Second, by meditating you generate an atmosphere around you, due to the vibrations of peaceful thoughts. So, anyone who comes to you takes benefit of your meditation and they will also experience peace in their minds.

Third, when you meditate to the world, your thoughts travel and touch many people’s minds, bringing peace to them. It is as if your room has extended itself and covered the whole world…

The world needs peace more than never… It is everyone’s turn to send a drop of peace through meditation.

Do I really need a challenge?

To live well is natural for humans from our society, different than what movies and television series may show. We all want to have a place in which we feel safe, peace of mind and we want to be surrounded by people who give us the sensation of protection.

Paradoxically, our society stimulates us to leave our comfort zone and it encourages us to DARE, to live life as an adventure: check the movies! Check the TV series!

So, how to balance both ideas? Do we really need a challenge right now? Should we stay in our comfort zone eating popcorns while watching something?

In fact, both things are not exclusive – to want to live well and comfortable, and to want to live as an adventurer – and they can be easily complementary.

First of all, focus on your inner side, that space inside your mind… and feel the peace that is there. It is yours. It is you. Going there is a very special adventure…

Second, challenge the things that don’t contribute to that peace – watching movies, TV series, popcorn. That is the real daring, because even though they give you the sensation of external peace, as soon as they are over, that peace goes away too. Challenge them and start an innovation in your life by meditating, studying something that enriches you or learning some wonderful new skill.

Then it is possible you feel a wave of boredom, after all you have had a habit. Just remember: you have that inner space, full of peace, just inside you. Think of it and you will be there… Much better than a watch party!

Peace and prosperity

The connection between peace and prosperity is obvious; if you look the world map, the peaceful is a country, the richer would be… more or less. In fact, one of the most violent regions in the world is not that poor and some of the poorest countries do not lack peace.

However, in terms of an individual, the peaceful the person is, the more prosperous he will be… right?

Again, it is not a definite affirmation; I am sure you know many people who are EXTREMELY peaceful and they are in bankruptcy too!

However, in a subtle level, when you are in peace, your mind works in a different way… it is more concentrated, focused and thoughts come not as a storm, but as a soft breeze…

The more peaceful someone is, their perception will be clear and so, to make decisions will be much easier than without that feeling of peace.

Besides, because the person is peaceful they will have a tendency to spend less time, energy and money, saving the most they can.

That’s right, at least in a subtle level, prosperity comes with inner peace.

So if you feel you have not found the key to prosperity, or you have lost it, just give it a try and experience meditation or other techniques that help you to be peaceful.

Goals in life, are that important?

What is your goal in life? Goals?

Ok, let’s rethink that question: what can you do with your life, so that you become happy, peaceful, full of love and in harmony with others?

Tough question? Not so much… even though we often don’t ask us that question out loud, most of the time we would ask that question in a subtle way, particularly when we have a big decision to make.

In fact, goals are not as important in life as it is to have a memorable life, a life that at the end of the journey you will feel was so worthy to have lived it.

Now, don’t misunderstand me: to have goals, aims or objectives are EXTREMELY important. The problem is that to fulfilling a goal, sometimes you lose your happiness and peace, you miss whatever makes you feel loved and you fight other people.

So, are you going for a big goal in life? DO IT! Conquer your fears and overcome your obstacles, but don’t lose focus of what is important in life.

Enjoying a peaceful state of mind

The crisis caught us all… but, has it got into our minds too?

Wise words from something I’ve heard many years ago: you may get sick in your body, but don’t let the sickness reaches you into your mind. The same applies to the uncertainty we are living.

Our minds are fragile in a sense, as it comes very easily under the influence of the circumstances. If the situations are peaceful, so will the mind; if the environment where you are is hostile, then the mind will suffer for it.

However, by detaching your mind from the circumstances it is possible to experience peace even though the situations themselves are not peaceful. And by experiencing peace within, it isn’t impossible to be able to affect the external environment.

It requires some (lots of) self-control and a certain level of discipline to prevent mind to be influenced by whatever is happening around.

Meditation is one of the ways that enable the individual to experience peace, no matter what is going on around them. Just try it:
Sit down with no other reason but to experience a few moments of meditation…Let yourself feel your thoughts decreasing in quantity and speed… gradually, going from a storm to a rain and then to a few drops…Let yourself feel instead of thinking words… just feel your own peace… there, inside you…It is peace… a sensation of calmness and tranquility… a feeling of satisfaction and the absence of worries… a creative energy that subtly fills the being…It is peace… like a shield that protects you and your environment…It is peace…

When you meditate for some time in a regular basis, naturally you will start to feel the benefit of being peaceful, you will see changes in the scenario of your life and you will be able to change deeply.

You may not prevent the crisis to take place, but it won’t enter inside you.

You are the source of harmony - Reason 24

We live together and we flourish as a worldwide big team, because we are human beings and it is in our nature.  Still, things don’t work always as we would like, because, among other reasons, we are so different from each other.

The pursuit of harmony is common nowadays, maybe motivated by the number of interpersonal conflicts.  For that reason, companies hire coaches and consultants to help their teams to work well together, mediators go from country to country to help solve issues and you sit down from time to time to wonder what to do about your own relationships.

It is easier for leaders as they always think of themselves as the ones to generate harmony.  They won’t look for it from others, nor will they wait for others to change, but they will provide that energy from their own actions, attitude and awareness.  To be part of the inner circle of a leader is an opportunity to feel harmony in practical life.

Harmony is something exquisite, because it is based on the truth, peace and mutual good wishes and it can be a healing experience for an entire group.  Where harmony prevails as the constant backdrop for any resolution of momentary conflict, it will be just like a modern piece of art: challenging and beautiful at the same time.

Caring about yourself and others

When President Obama went for his Obamacare, he was not only doing something political and probably fulfilling an ideal from his heart. And it does not matter if you believed him, agreed with him or even hated him. He was doing one of the most natural instincts we have as humans. He was caring.

Whether it is a crucial business advantage, manifested via Customer Service, or something that glued together a family or a friend, caring is part of being human. However, the way caring happens have been changing along the years.

Although many people still try to care for others, time and the pace of life creates situations where the physical presence is simply not possible. So, it is time to understand caring beyond the physical: that important and powerful energy release when one person thinks well of another is also caring. That implies caring of others start with caring of the self.

Many years ago, I had the honor to translate an authority in spirituality. BK Jayanti is an Indian citizen resident in London. Since she was a child, she has been exposed to spirituality in many ways and at the same time, she was educated in a very Western country. That blend makes BK Jayanti's words have a different taste as she does not speak only from one point of view.

In Medellin, she gave a lecture to a group of people; among them, many kidnapped people's families were present. Her words were powerful and simple, full of knowledge and very gentle. Basically, what she said was that those people (the victims) were dependable on the attendees' feelings. If they cared about them, then they should change their mindset and experience peace so that those people will experience the same.

Does it sound strange? What about this: didn't you ever experience something someone else was feeling?

Care about yourself, being careful about what you think and feel. Then, think in the same way in relation to others,  creating a huge chain of powerful thoughts and feelings, wait and see the results.

Economics of hope

Sometime ago, during a big economical crisis, the value of TRUST was touched, and how it stimulates economy.

Same thing can be said for PEACE and HAPPINESS. It is logical, right, that if in a place people is peaceful and happy, then naturally economy blossoms and grows. After all, instead of the basic needs that moves economy in other regions, in these areas economy will be moved with that force of innovation and a natural sense of keeping things as they are; after all, they are great!

I was also thinking of the value of HOPE and its influence in economy. I come from Brazil and since I was a child, there has always been a general hope that, one day, that country would be a rich place to live. Different than other countries, most of those who are poor are taught to work hard and to look for opportunities in life. Slowly, that started to pay back and now it is a place with all the possibilities of becoming one of the next superpowers in the new emerging order.

But more than work, Brazilians have been a people with hope. I still remember my mother coming from her work, about 1 am everyday, and how she would express her desire of one day have her own place. When we were able to move out from her parents' house to a very small flat, she couldn't stop expressing her happiness. And like her, many mothers and fathers had the same dream and were able to make it true.

The system to get a house when you don't have much money and credits are not easy is a very cruel one, as the person pays much and much more for their home. But that home comes... In other countries, instead of counting with the blessing of being able to have a place, they prefer to complain and protest.

Hope makes people more open to opportunities life gives everyone. Those without hope don't take the opportunity as it is often an expensive one, even though it is affordable. Hope makes people sacrifice small or big pleasures because it gives people the big picture, and they go for it.

Very few people realize how powerful this economy engine, hope is. I do hope you can use it well.

Meditation for leaders

While the world demands more and more from their leaders, a few people in the world are trying to offer those same people tools or the possibility of change to cope with the new reality of time.

I feel meditation is one of those powerful tools that a leader can use so that he can recover his or her energy, and keep their leadership going on. But how that works?

Without trying to be a scientist, I can see from many readings and from my own experience that meditating releases some part of the brain energy we normally don't use. It can be the right side of the brain, or some bad memories still stored within. That gives the leader a new point of view of things around her or him.

But it is not only that; to reach the stage of meditation, you have to relax yourself first. Not any relaxation, but a very deep one. That kind of relaxation allows the body to perform even better.

So, more power!

Next, when a leader meditates, she or he detaches the self from everything going on around. Along with that detachment, comes a very deep feeling of peace, which balances the mind. Peace is the perfect healing feeling for negative thoughts or destructive emotions, something that is quite present in the leader's life. The healing allows the leader to reconnect with other people easier and to build future relationships.

And how do you do it?

  • Look for a time and a space without interruption  It is important that you are awaken and not so tired (if you are too tired, rest before meditation, or walk in the nature a little bit). If you like, use some meditation music. Meditation commentaries are widely available. Using music can also help in another way: it helps you to keep track of time.
  • Sit down in a relaxed but straight position. Feel your body and start relaxing it. The easiest way is to talk with your body and relax it in your mind.
  • Focus your mind in a point in the middle of your forehead. Visualize it as a small point of white light, and tell yourself to direct all the energy you have towards that point.
  • You can use plenty of images at this point: you can see yourself flying above, smiling during stressful situations or enjoying a soft breeze at a beach. Those images will be interpreted by your brain and body, and you will relax even further.
  • Now, think about peace. A phrase like "I am peace" helps. Talk to yourself about the peace you are experiencing, enjoy it and let that peace takes you completely.
  • Experience your mind full of peace: peaceful thoughts, peaceful feelings and images that evoke peace.
  • Tell yourself that peace is part of your life, it is something you always have there and you can always reach for it.
  • At the end of the meditation, let that same peace to take care of your body, relaxing it even more.
  • And slowly come back.

The constant practice of meditation will help even more. Just try it!

Peace Progress

As a resident of this wonderful country, full of potentials, Colombia, I follow the news on the peace process very closely. It is the third time we have such a process, at least in a very serious and committed way: first was during Pastrana's government, second was during Uribe's government and now during Santos' government.

The three of them were totally different in form and essence, but still I feel the connection between them. Out of the three, the most visionary was Pastrana's and I do hope some of those initiatives emerge again. It failed though, probably for bad management and perhaps because there is a thin line between vision and idealism, and sometimes idealists forget we live in a very real world. Still, behind the failure there was success merged. For me, peace in a country is a process of construction, not a snap of magic.

The second process is very controversial, as it was done with paramilitary  They emerged as a kind of civilian response to the guerilla  but they got life on their own. And violence. Many people don't see the success here, I guess it is just me, but I have good memory and I remember that there was not one week, and for a long time, when I did not hear news about the atrocities done by paramilitary groups. Now, there are much more than one year I don't hear it. But more than the success, lesson here is the reality of a peace process. Even though it dismantle the structure, it can't change much of the people, so some of these people are still involved in violent activities, and some groups have emerged, but they are very far from the paramilitary style, they are just acting violently.

The former processes can be very valuable for this one now. On one hand, provide the areas dominated by the guerilla with solid chances for economic growth - I remember there were news even Iran was contacted during Pastrana's government, which would start some business in one of those areas. On the other hand, be more realistic, knowing some of these people will still continue in their violence due to any reason, and create mechanisms to prevent that, or at least minimize it.

I am not related to politics, as a foreigner much less, so another point which is important is to take care of three very basic elements for those who were related to the guerilla  First is health - years, for some decades, of life in jungle can affect your health. Not only physically, mental health is something that has to be considered too to avoid situations of war veterans coming back from war. Ah, let's not forget the peace process has to be extended to the military.

Second, education is a powerful tool. It gives people hope and understanding, and enable them to go beyond their limitations. It also helps to prevent people to go back to violence. I feel education can be considered a long term element, focusing in giving basic education for people who were directly involved in the guerilla  but also making sure somehow a high education for their children.

Last, but no least, spirituality and values. In fact, for me this is the most important as it helps people to go back to their own roots of peace and love, the wonderful feeling of being part of this human family. In Sri Lanka, where the end of their war was a very violent one, guerilla members received raja yoga course as a way to cope with their new civilian life. Many of them are back to the society, and spirituality helps them to have a different approach towards problems.

In reality, all humans are now at war, at least in their minds and spirit. Desires, lack of satisfaction, animosity, hate and many other negative qualities have created a room in everyone's heart. The ultimate peace process is in that sacred place, helping each one to overcome their own violence and reach an original state of peace.

A Happy Christmas

Around three decades ago, John Lennon would launch a new song with great success: "Happy Christmas The War is Over" was not only a big success, but it gave the world a more modern way to celebrate this important date.

However, three decades ago, the war is definitely not over. Yes, looking at the world I cannot help but admiring that the effort of so many people have bear some fruit and we have a world without wars between countries, for the longest term since 1900 came.

But the wars have been transferred to within the countries, the cities and homes. I am not talking either about terrorism, but the war in the minds of men and women, which creates conflicts and problems everywhere.

In that case, the war is over is if you want it (as the song says). If I want, the war is over, as my mind is mine and I can control the emerging thoughts and feelings. But, why don't I (you, we) do it?

Probably the main reason is that there is something still lacking in the self. So, "Happy Christmas" starts from filling the self completely. We need few things in life: peace, love, happiness, power and purity, all of them can be obtained, because we already have them inside. Through meditation or some other technique, I must connect with that quality within and just enjoy it.

Then, the war internally will be over. And, one day, Lennon's dream will be fulfilled.

Back or forth?

During years, since I started to get interested in the Nobel Prizes, there has been a very interesting fluctuation between politics and non-politics.

Well, to be sincere, most of the assigned prizes have been quite political. Perhaps the only exception I can really think of is Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

This year, 3 women have been chosen, which is by itself quite intriguing. Although all of the 3 have their actions embedded in politics, their choice goes beyond that. As it says in the statement, they have been chosen "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work".

First of all, STANDING OVATION to you three. I don't think there will any doubt or polemic as the former years. But it is the non-violent piece appeals to me. As I have said many times before, I really don't believe in peace as a result of the lack of violence or war. I live in Colombia, and I can see that even the war being eradicated, there is still so much violence. I have seen in countries where the biggest violence is a run-over, and still I see so much anger inside.

But I understand it is a process, perhaps longer than we would appreciate, to stop associating peace with war.

Is it possible? I think it is, and it will be real revolution, much more powerful than any other. When people - at least a critical mass of people - realise within that peace starts from the self, then the world will change dramatically.

Think what will happen with the economy when people are really satisfied, when marketing cannot attract others, but just inform. What will happen when people are not looking for show, but for being peaceful?

Probably, you would think it will be quite boring. I used to think like that. And, yes, in the present context it will be boring. But, contexts change. And really hope this way back to non-violence by the Nobel-prize granters can make people more aware of its importance.

Another date for peace?

Tomorrow, September 21st, it will be the the 30th. time world thinks of peace. At least, that is the idea.

However, in a very fast pacing world, this is hardly news. After all, it is just a date, right?

For many years, I myself have been living with the war. Although it is not declared officially, the confluence of some guerrilla groups, paramilitarism and the Military has made Colombians live in a constant fear or at least apprehension in relation to the war. For me, the consequences of a war are very clear: economic problems and psychological problems are too normal to be comfortable.

But I have also learnt that peace is not the mere absence of war, and here I have had some proof of that. Even though the situation is like that for decades, still Colombia is one of the countries that grows more, people are quite nice and the quality of life is so good that I was surprise to hear about a Brazilian manager who feels safer in Bogota than in Brazil.

Perhaps it will be good if people think of peace not only in terms of absence of war, which is happening worldwide in numbers and facts - it is decreasing, slowly but firmly. Peace is more than that, it is that wonderful feeling in your heart that all is OK and there is nothing to worry about.

If that is done, peace won't be remembered one day a year by a few, but it will be lived by many the whole year.

Is it a dream? Yes. I hope you can also dream with me.
