Silence and chaos

There is a kind of noise that exists both, outside and within. It’s the chaos of daily life - messages, decisions, stress - and the chaos of the mind - overthinking, reacting, remembering all details...

To avoid that noise or to decrease its volume, we have silence… Not the silence that is the absence of noise; silence as an inner state, a space we can enter even when the world is loud.

As we are living in the age of chaos, noise is part of the pattern… Yes, we could find a place in the mountains, far from all. Or we can resort to silence.

In the midst of chaos, silence is not weakness. It’s strength. It’s clarity. And it’s healing.

Meditation teaches us to return to that inner silence. Just a few minutes of stillness can shift our state. Meditation isn’t about controlling thoughts, but about not being controlled by them. It allows the mind to settle, and in that settling, we begin to hear our own wisdom again.

Silence opens us to hear the real sound, the sound of our inner voice.

Silence also has the power to heal. Emotional pain, stress, fatigue - these begin to soften in the presence of true stillness. Not the silence of suppression, but of awareness, that moment when we stop trying to fix everything and simply sit in silence. At that point, something begins to mend… maybe not externally - the age we live is of chaos - but inside.

Inside there is deep healing, deep awareness, but the beauty of this practice of silence is that it permeates our reality… After all, even in relationships and daily tasks, silence has a role as it brings focus, patience and depth.

In conversations, a pause can be more meaningful than a rush of words. At work, a moment of inner quiet can lead to better decisions than hours of action and discussions.

As chaos is all around, silence is not a retreat from life; it is the key to a better life.

In chaos, it becomes our compass and guide.

What to forget, what to remember

Forgetting and remembering are two sides of the same coin: consciousness.

I am not talking here of oblivion where memories are erased or blurred as if they were behind a fog.

Nor do I speak of the memory as the obsessive thought that does not allow us to erase something from the mind.

I speak of the conscious act of recovering valuable memories, since along with them, virtues, values and inner powers will arise. These memories can be the solution to a problem present at work, a conflict with another person or they can give rise to hope in the face of a serious health situation.

I speak of the conscious act of reducing guilt, both of oneself and of others; forget so much that we stop blaming. I'm talking about the conscious act of forgetting bad times with a person because you understand them and you know that we all go through bad days. I speak of the conscious act of instead of allowing negative memories, to strengthen the present wonder.

For this, do this simple daily exercise:

Think: What will I remember today that will bring into my life qualities or powers that I need so much?

Think: What are the alternatives I have to relate to a person, so that I forget bad moments of past interactions?

That will help you improve your quality of life and will also give other people an opportunity to improve in your eyes.

Be a conqueror

A few years ago, I watched a powerful video in which a singer, survival of a plane crash with visible scars, sang a song that never came out of my mind.

It was about being a conqueror, because that was what she thought she was. That is what she was.

Many times, you have to overcome something, avoid another situation or just winning over what is taking place. At other times, you must be a conqueror, a victorious soul, because there is a battle outside there…

Being a conqueror does not mean to fight or struggle, but to shift awareness and look at reality with a different outlook.

It means to act in a conscious way, knowing the reasons and meaning of our acts, being aware of our errors and change the needed behaviors.

If you are at a war right now in your life, don’t give up. Work on your awareness and be the conqueror you really are.

Victory or defeat

Victory or defeat is a relative perception. An example is given by Peter Drucker, the famous consultant and guru, about a leader who overstepped his faculties and tried to get advantage of a situation. It was clearly unethical and Drucker shows how the leader got his victory, only to turn into a horrible defeat a few years later and his leadership ceased to be considered magnificent.

In a very recent spiritual class, I was touched by a point that stated a short-term defeat can be a long-term victory.

Common people often don’t think in these terms - victory or defeat - but that’s our lives: “I have got this job”, “I lost that client”, “My friend stopped talking to me”, “My child got the best marks at college”, and so on.

Sometimes we win.

By working on our awareness, we are able to take the maximum of our victories in such a way that we can win again in the future. Besides, we may inspire others to win and, last thing, if for any reason our victory meant a defeat for another person, we can help the other one to feel OK, process what happened and be victorious next time.

Sometimes we lose.

  • We can always do alchemy and convert defeat into victory by:
  • Learning a powerful lesson that empowers the self for the future.
  • Imbibing a few useful qualities like humility, which otherwise wouldn’t come to our lives.
  • Changing defeat into a step closer to victory, as there is always a valuable experience that comes with defeat.

Translating that into our lives:

  • “I have got this job.” I will work in a very effective way, being aware that I am inspiring others too. If, for any reason, someone I know lost an opportunity like this, I will find a time to talk with the person and see how to help them.
  • “I lost that client.” It is time for deep reflection, to understand what happened, maybe to talk with a friend, my boss or a coach about it. And move on! There are more clients out there.
  • “My friend stopped talking to me.” I will make some time to try and talk to them, by using honesty and kindness. Meanwhile, I will send them best wishes and positive thoughts.
  • “My child got the best marks at college.” I will celebrate along with them, but I will be clear my love for them is not conditioned to whatever happened in their lives; I love them as they are.

I wish you the best victory, a real victory.

Giving up, or giving… up…

Many times in life we just give up: school, children, marriage, career, life…

It happens because we are tired or we realize this would not be what we wanted. An unwanted outcome is the sense or repentance: what would have happened if I went along with my school, career, and family? And the incredible sense of having done something wrong.

However there is another way. You can give… UP…

This means to keep on doing what you are doing, to stay with the people you are right now and to follow a similar routine, but with a different awareness.

Most of the problems are related to your perception of what others, situations and you are; you change that perception from the source, by changing your awareness, and the reality also changes. Maybe it is not 100%, but you will feel the difference when you start to relate to the world in with a different consciousness.

So, what are you waiting for? Give UP, without giving up… take care!

Caring, still caring…

And December has come!

The pandemic has caught us off guard and is still around, making a mess with the economy and the society we know, but a good value implemented during these hard times was TO CARE.

Of course, first we have to care of our own health by wearing masks or washing hands several times, by being alert in relation to signs that may indicate some sickness. But that makes us to care about others also, after all if that person would get sick, it would affect us too.

We have learnt to be careful and to leave aside the general carelessness we have been living.

But to care is much more than that…

  • It means to care in terms of raising awareness, which has been one of the biggest challenges during this crisis. We have had to change our own perspective of the world, our old habits and the way to interact with each other.
  • To care means we care about each other and we have generated initiatives to help each other during these hard times. Although many tragedies have taken place, it is heart-warming to see the dedication of people to improve others’ lives.
  • To care is to be careful with signs of depression or anxiety. Mental health is also in a peak and if we really want to be happy and to be in harmony with others, we must be more alert to those signs.

So keep on caring!

Am I still me?

Something a few people talk about is how crisis change people, for better and for worse. Maybe a new temperament emerges or an incredible ability of dealing with tough situations that turn a common person into a hero.

That’s also part of taking care of the self: to prevent the self to be contaminated or suffer of a post-traumatic stress so serious after a crisis that they may become almost unrecognizable.

Self-care in this case starts with knowing exactly the answer for this interesting riddle: Who am I? The idea behind is if you don’t really know yourself, it is easy to get lost in the hurricane of situations and adapt in a negative way like the frog…

Many years ago, I used to stay during holidays on the beach along with my late grandmother.
Once, she was cooking something and so let a bit pot of water in the stove while we went out to do an errand.
When we came back, the water was boiling. We could see the smoke, but she has left the pot open and there was a surprise…
A frog was inside it!

Legend says a frog would jump into boiling water and because its physiology, it would adapt to the temperature; unknowingly it would start to cook and when it realizes the danger, it would be too late…

Maybe that is the case when a crisis happens, because we adapt, which is good, but it is possible we start to lose some of our principles, most precious values, awareness and attitude. We start to change as people

By reflecting on the self and its depth, the individual learns more about him or herself and is able to keep their values, principles, awareness, attitude and all that is important and precious, no matter the crisis that is taking place.

In fact, this will help to overcome the obstacles and advance onto another level, taking care of the self all the way.

This is part of a series of posts on self-care.

Being brave and fearlessness in a world of uncertainty

Uncertainty has one particular consequence: it creates fear. And fear blocks the creative capacity and the ability to make decisions; bad decisions happen, corrections do not happen and mistakes perpetuate.

And this is a world of uncertainty, a world of fear… How to live within that?

Everyday news shows bad things taking place in the world and even though the chances that happened to you are minuscule, the fear is planted in the mind. It seems that will be part of the stream of our society for a long time.

We have two possibilities here: we either resign to this reality and we just move on, or we stand up and deal with the fear.

For me it is the second option and the key is to develop myself in such a way that I have the qualifications to face the challenges come in my way.
  • Every morning, I dedicate myself for… my own self: meditation, exercise and planning the day with a positive view.
  • Then, I read something positive. Not anything, but some powerful ideas that change my perspective.
  • Whenever I eat, I do it in a calm state, being conscious and allowing my body to assimilate the sustenance, with my mind taking the positive energy that comes from that simple act.
  • When I meet other people or just walk around, I check on my awareness, working with my personality and giving me a chance to enjoy, to rest or to learn.

This all reinforces my own capacity for facing uncertainty. This all strengthens my own courage.

First world, is that hard?

I was born in Brazil, I have lived in Chile for two years and I am in Colombia for the past 26 years. I also travel a lot and I have stayed long times abroad, particularly in India, but also in England and the U.S.

And I realize that if someone lives in a first-world or third-world country is difficult to understand I don’t live in either of them… I am living in the middle, and since I was a child.

Particularly during the dictatorial military period in Brazil, I didn’t like the idea of belonging to the third world, the reality of the time; it was around then that the term developing countries[1] got popularized and Brazil was quickly classified like that.

Initially it just sound like a polite way to say the same – and it still has that ring in it – but along the years, what I have seen is that by developing in a proper and integral way, a country can reach the first world. That is a firm belief I have that any country could be a first world country, and so giving their population a better life. This is why I am posting this.

I lived in Chile just after Pinochet has left, so it was still underdeveloped. By seeing its growth and the fact that now it is part of the first world club[2]… I don’t want to get into the debate (is it or not?), but I have seen sure signs even when I was living there that may be useful for other countries:
  • A respect for taxes. I was really surprised when I bought something in the streets and I got a boleta (invoice), as street business is often informal. Later, I would have a glimpse of this that comes from a good use of tax-payers’ money and a nice system. For instance, a common way of taxes evasion is to enter the country with a product in the bag. Once, I went from Buenos Aires to Santiago with a friend who had several books in her bag; at the time of customs, she went straight to the agent and showed the books and the invoice. As books don’t pay tax, he just looked at it and he allowed us to go. Even when there is the need of paying, it is quite easy and fair. Quick summary: by educating people to value paying taxes and by using them in a proper way, a country develops.
  • Training. There is a system that motivates companies to do training as the value can be discounted in their taxes declaration. As I was a trainer myself, that came very handy and I do miss a system like that, living in Colombia. By giving opportunities for others to be trained and learned different skills, a country develops.
  • Awareness of opportunity. Chile is the land of opportunity and if a foreigner goes there and dedicates himself or herself, it is possible to climb very high; although I can’t say if it is like that for nationals, it looked as it is. Although it is a relatively small country in terms of population, this gives a big advantage in relation to neighbor countries. By changing the perception instead of lacking to an opportunity, a country has a better chance for development.
  • Work, work and work. Chileans work very hard and it has been helping the country at the time of climbing the ladder of first world. But it is not only hard working, as I would include Colombians in that category too; Chileans are often very much success-driven, which creates a nice dynamic in the country in general. Stimulate work, but direct it towards attaining success.
  • Little corruption. That is the most impressive part of living in Chile… Little to say about that, really, just check corruption indexes[3], and it comes just after Uruguay in the whole Latin America.  It really stimulates the economy to know people won’t use their power for personal advantage. And maybe that is why people do pay taxes. Very simple: educate people to not get tempted by corruption and the country will develop even more.

Every day you look at the sun as if it is the first time – Reason 65

As a coach and endurance athlete, Christopher Bergland has said, ‘…everybody needs some thrills in life to feel exuberant and fully alive[1].  On the basis of this, the world could be split in two.

One part of the world is looking for happiness, joy, a sense of being alive through newness and excitement, despite the potential dangers Bergland mentions in his article.  This creates a very interesting dynamic and makes things tasty and spicy, but they don’t really change life per se, and eventually the ‘supernovelwonderfulfantastic’ thing is just boring…

The other part of the world likes their own house, their own lives and they are OK, thank you very much!  They may look like a bunch of conservative people trying to prevent progress, and yet they are looking for the same final result as everyone else: happiness, joy, a sense of being alive.

Then, there are leaders, who generate their own happiness, joy and a sense of being alive.  Novelty comes in the realm of the mind and awareness, most of the time, not from the physical environment.

As a leader, every time the sun rises, it is always like the first time, with all the excitement and energy that comes from novelty seeking by other means.

[1] The Perils of Novelty Seeking is an article written by athlete and coach Christopher Bergland, for Psychology Today.  You can find the article at this address: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-athletes-way/201311/the-perils-novelty-seeking

Instead of blaming, responsibility is encouraged – Reason 60

Just visualise a room with a very beautiful flower-vase.  Now, imagine two little children playing, running around the table where the vase is and then, crash!  The beautiful vase is now part of history…  But, wait, their mother comes to the room and first thing she asks is: Who did this?  Now, can you see both children pointing at each other?

Blaming turns part of our general culture: you do it wrongly and you look for someone to get the blame for it…

However, a leader lives in a different way, by taking over responsibility as those who are responsible have the duty to correct their mistakes; instead, those who are guilty are excluded from our society.

As an example, Claudia Palacios[1], a Colombian journalist, quoted a very interesting statistics during a panel organised by Images and Voices of Hope (IVOH) in Bogota[2]: 70% of prisoners in the jails of Colombia continue on their same criminal path after leaving the institution, while only 30% are able to rehabilitate.

Mrs Palacios went on to compare these statistics with those of another organisation[3] that helps people from guerrilla and other illegal groups to come back to society, without the use of imprisonment.  They consistently achieve rehabilitation levels of 70% where one main element is to inculcate in those people a sense of responsibility.

Leaders encourage a responsible awareness, so, no matter how serious the error is, they will uphold the person’s dignity, by helping them to be responsible instead of punishable.
